7. Use your strengths and manage your weaknesses

In every negotiation each party has strengths and weaknesses. If one party held all the cards then it would not be a negotiation, they would simply be dictating the terms.

Be aware of your strengths and how you can best use them and be aware of your weaknesses and know how to manage them. Part of managing your weaknesses is to disguise them as strengths wherever possible.

Strength in a negotiation comes from things like willingness to walk away, low perceived need, no or low time constraints or having something that the other party needs but can’t easily get elsewhere.

Weakness comes from strong need for what the other party is offering, short time constraints, or low need on the part of the other party.

8. Respond rather than react

A reaction implies that it is a reflex and doesn’t involve thought or strategy. Skilled negotiators try to get their opponents reacting.

Responding on the other hand is keeping your control and not doing anything that is not a thoughtful application of your strategy.

If you have the habit of reacting then it is very easy for a skilled negotiator to manipulate you during the negotiation.

9. Attract rather than chase

It is very difficult for you to win a negotiation if you are doing the chasing. The idea is to make your proposals in such a way that they draw the other party toward your desired result. This is achieved by a combination of having a good offer and presenting it with good negotiation skills.

10. Break complicated issues into simple elements and then negotiate the elements.

The human brain can only process so much information in one bite. If you are involved in a complex negotiation it will be better to break it down into several components and negotiate them as separate issues.

Some negotiators have, as a strength, the ability to mentally hold large amounts of information and they will try to keep the negotiation complicated. If this is not your strength then don’t fall into this trap.

11. Know when to negotiate concepts and when to negotiate details

There are times when the details are extremely important but there are other times when they are just a distraction. Develop the skill of being able to see the difference.

It also may be a good strategy in many negotiations to gain agreement on a general concept first and then move on to negotiate the details.

12. Have a system to look after the details

Negotiations by their nature are generally verbal. Once the negotiation is over it is important to get the agreement into writing and signed as soon as possible.

The simplest way to achieve this is to already have a system in place, before the negotiation even starts. For a salesman this could be accomplished by having an official order form. For a complicated big business negotiation it may mean handing over to your legal department.

Keep in mind that the longer the time between the negotiation and the signing of the formal agreement the more likely it will be that the negotiation will reopen.

Negotiation is not a skill that you can master in five minutes, but these twelve basic principles are a good place to start.

Some people try visualisations, or even give a Vipassana retreat a go, but on the whole, unless you are a diehard spiritual seeker who has had much pain and discontent in your life, meditation is one of those things that you look at, are curious about, but turn from getting too caught up in.I think this is because the benefits of meditation have not been discussed enough – and when it is discussed it seems to be spoken of in terms of – freedom from illusion, or mind, liberation from the body or samsara, and as interesting as that is – it doesn’t really sell the idea, the terms are too abstract. Unless you are caught in a corner with nowhere else to go, unless you are withstanding some crisis, pain or disillusionment, you do not have what is necessary to persevere with it, til you can see why people indulge and recommend it.People also I think can get caught up in the surrounding philosophy and related fields, such as the psychic domain and this leads people into the future rather than working with what is happening now. Meditation next to future possibilities seems a little backward, colourless, or mundane. So it becomes easy to see why so many gravitate to clairvoyance and related fields the whole time dabbling only minimally with meditation.When one first begins meditation, visualisations or some focus may be used, and the idea is to follow and stay with the particular focus or imagery – rather than get swept back into the thought dance that just follows associations around and around. As new meditators do not even realise that they are getting swept back into their thought dance at times, or even consistently throughout the meditation they cannot feel or sense what lies in between their thoughts. So the experience may be only so – so. Or if they are aware that they are getting caught back up in the music of the thought dance, they seem powerless against it, it seems hopeless.If one is able to persevere through all this, and actually continue to meditate and reach beyond the thought dance, they then may encounter an experience they cannot explain with their mind which scares them, they for a moment lose contact with the world around them everything they know and love, and something else penetrates, and perhaps penetrates too deeply, thus scaring them away. Or they encounter some repressed emotion from a previous time, this overwhelms them, overcomes them, and easily waylays their interest in the field.There are then many obstacles to meditation which could easily derail even the best of intentions – and at the end of the day, it is normally only when people are backed into a corner of pain or disillusionment that they feel and know the necessity of remaining with this technique. I am here to let you know that you do not need to be amidst the grip of depression, stress or meaninglessness to find solace and comfort within meditation – for meditation offers much bliss, a greater sense of purpose, and a wonderful ability to connect with life, with what really matters and easily restores your faith in the goodness of life, and of being. Meditation will enable you to lever yourself up above the layer of thought in your mind so that you are not as swayed by them, you can see and feel them more clearly, and even though they are still there, still attempting to sway you into moods, and actions and behaviours, you have a far better ability to withstand them, and instead see their fleeting foundation, and powerlessness.While the thoughts in your mind remain a type of God voice, an authority, you will never have the clarity to see that behind the impressive boom box voice of the wizard is just a little man hiding behind a curtain who is insecure. This ultimately is why people indulge meditation, this is the immediate ultimate and most effective initial aim. This will deepen with time, to bring forward greater experience and reverence for life, appreciation and connection. But if you can sense the benefit of being able to have control over your thoughts rather than allowing each and every thought to move and motivate you – just the sense of power and insight that comes from this, induces intense bliss, a sense of freedom like you have never known, and an authentic optimism and appreciation.When you can look at your thoughts and not feel compelled into action as a result, when you can see your sadness and anger but not fall into them and let them invade and influence you, you have significantly altered your life path for the better, right up until your death bed. No one can take this from you, they can try, they can isolate, persecute, condemn or try and manipulate you, but the link between you and their words are broken, just as you can see the futility of your own thoughts, so too can you see more penetratingly into theirs. Thus leaving you free to consider their actions, behaviours, or coercions without needing to give in and follow them, refute or rebel against them, for you see so clearly the weightlessness of their intent.This certainly makes meditation worth looking at again, yes? Finding Motivation in the Little Things

Are you one of those people that have a difficult time finding the motivation to get things done? One of the biggest misconceptions in life is that motivation will simply fall into your lap and everything will be great! C’mon – surely you know this is not what actually happens in the real world. You really need to be proactive!

Do you wait for some gigantic “thing” to happen and then think this is what will motivate you? Stop kidding yourself – in the end you will bail anyway because your initial expectations were unreasonable. So, of course, when this just doesn’t happen, people become dejected and just completely give up on whatever they were looking for motivation for in the first place!

This is just not the way to go! Instead of waiting for motivation to magically appear, why not try creating your own motivation? Why? because you can… and it’s easier than you might think!

Finding Little Things to Motivate You

The first thing to do is to ensure you have an environment that is conducive to healthy motivation.

What does this mean? Well, it simple terms, it means you need a clutter-free workspace, a computer monitor at a comfortable height and a comfortable chair at your desk. Ergonomics plays a big part in positive energy. If you are not comfortable,these things can zap you of your energy and motivation in a big hurry.

How can you expect yourself to be motivated if you have a sore neck or a sore back all day long? You’ll be too busy worrying about carpal tunnel or back spasms and you’ll need to get off task every 5 minutes to adjust your positioning!

Have you actually asked yourself this?: “How much better would I feel and would my attitude change if I worked in a place that I actually liked to spend time in?” I know the answer! Think about it – so do you!

The moment you sort out your work environment and make it comfortable for yourself and content with your needs, you’ll instantly take action, find the motivation to get started and follow through.

Everyone has different and unique motivational factors. That means what works for your co-workers or friends may not work for you. What you need to do is determine the unique things that excite and motivate you. I reward myself with my favorite snack (chocolate!….lol) after completing an important task! Now here’s a bonus! Give yourself a bonus! After you have spent all this time achieving whatever it is – give yourself a pat on the back (and a chocolate bar…lol!) and reward yourself for a job well done!

I find more motivation by sprinkling mini-rewards throughout my day for each little task I tick off my daily to-do list. Use the KISS system – keep it simple stupid! you’ll aleviate yourself of self pressure at the same time, and get heaps more out of the way in a shorter period of time!
