Body Piercing Aftercare & Healing Essentials

That is, with the same kind of care, cleanliness and attention that you would to a serious injury to make sure that you don’t scar or get an infection. There are two different types of body piercings to consider: non-oral and oral.

Non-oral body piercing aftercare Keeping your piercing clean can’t be stressed too much! It just can’t. Twice a day, every day, without fail. No excuses. Use a mild antibacterial soap that doesn’t have fragrances in it, such as Provon® Antimicrobial Lotion Soap or Satin® Therapeutic Skin Cleanser, both of which are approved by the Association of Professional Piercers (APP). The best place to clean your piercing is usually in the shower, where the warm water will help you loosen and remove those crusties around the base of your jewelry. Use a cotton swab or a Kleenex to remove these, and then throw the swab or Kleenex away. Never use a washcloth — these things are breeding grounds for germs and bacteria! The same for bath towels after your shower! Then, with clean hands, gently cleanse the area with the soap and turn the jewelry so that the soap gets in the piercing and let this sit for a minute or two. After rotating it again, rinse thoroughly with warm, clear water. Make sure you get all of the soap out to prevent irritation. The rinsing is very important, so try to be thorough without irritating the area. It often helps to cup your hands and drizzle water over the area, since the shower stream can be a little too hard to aim directly on the area. Don’t forget your sea salt soaks After cleansing, a sea salt soak helps to draw out any piercing infection and impurities while soothing the area and calming any inflammation that may be present. Mix about ¼ teaspoon of sea salt with 8 ounces of warm water. Using a disposable cup, soak your piercing in this for ten minutes the first time, and five minutes each time after that. If your piercing is in a location that makes this difficult, apply the solution with cotton swabs, tissues or some other disposable product that’s soft and clean. Never use a hanky, washcloth or any other item that is going to be reused. Always pat your piercings dry with cotton balls, cotton swabs or tissues — don’t rub them, pat them. This reduces irritation and possible tearing of the skin and helps promote healing. Although it seems to be a minor step, keeping your piercings dry is actually an essential part of piercing aftercare because it reduces the opportunities for bacteria to breed (they love a warm, moist place to play). If you aren’t sure about mixing your sea salt soaks properly or it’s too inconvenient, there’s a new alternative on the market that’s less messy and is portable. H2Ocean® Piercing Aftercare Spray is a pre-mixed sea salt solution containing lysozyme, a natural antibacterial that is gentle to the skin. Simply spray it on the area and allow to drip dry; it’s easy to use because of their patent-pending compressed air delivery system that produces a fine mist. This product is guaranteed to heal navel piercings in only a month and a half if used regularly and is highly recommended by numerous piercing communities like BME and Prick magazine. H2Ocean® also comes in a portable size for your pocket or purse, which makes piercing aftercare away from home easier. X-pressions Piercing Aftercare Spray is also available for both oral and non-oral body piercings and is a mild antibacterial solution with purified water in a non-aerosol, pump spray with a pleasant, peppermint flavor. Once a day (not more often, because you’ll be unnecessarily irritating the area), check that the ends of your piercing jewelry are firmly screwed on. But wash your hands with antibacterial soap first. And now, a few “don’ts”

  • Don’t ever put hydrogen peroxide or alcohol on a piercing — they are too drying and will delay healing.
  • Don’t ever use Neosporin on a piercing — it can actually trap bacteria. Read the label; it actually says, “Not for puncture wounds.” Guess what? A piercing is a puncture wound.
  • Don’t ever remove your piercing jewelry before the piercing is completely healed, which may take months or up to a year. If you suspect a piercing infection, see your piercing professional or doctor first.
  • Don’t sleep on your piercing until the initial healing phase is over.
  • Don’t wear tight clothing over your piercing during the initial healing phase.

Oral piercing aftercare During the first three to six weeks after an oral piercing, rinse your mouth with an antibacterial agent after every meal to kill bacteria and make sure not tiny food particles aren’t lodged around your piercing just waiting to fester and turn into problems later. There are several excellent products on the market for this, including APP recommended Biotene and Tech2000 Dental Rinse; these have the proper ingredients and have the right potency to get the job done without being too strong. Don’t bother with mouthwash, because it’s not strong enough to do anything but cover your bad breath, which won’t be much consolation when you have a swollen, tender tongue because of improper aftercare. You can also use a commercial antibacterial rinse, but dilute it so that it isn’t too strong. If your tongue develops a whitish or yellowish look, your mouth rinse is too strong and will slow healing. Sea salt rinses … ahh! Mix the familiar warm water solution of 8 ounces water to ¼ teaspoon sea salt and swish this in your mouth for 15-20 seconds after drinking anything other than water and after smoking. It’s not only an aid to healing, but can be very soothing to the pierced area. If your oral piercing is sore or swollen, you can find some relief by allowing crushed ice to melt in your mouth. Popsicles, ice cream and the like also work, but will need to be followed up, like everything else, with a sea salt rinse (or H2Ocean®). Brush, brush, brush You can keep your tongue and piercing as clean as you want, but if you don’t brush your teeth well, you’ll still have millions of bacteria in your mouth. Try to brush your teeth three times a day during the first several weeks of healing. Buy a new soft-bristle brush that will be gentle on your piercing. Don’t use a brush that you’ve already used before your piercing, as it will harbor old germs. You should also gently brush the balls on the ends of your piercing jewelry to prevent the natural build-up of plaque on your jewelry. Oral piercing “don’ts”

  • Don’t smoke, chew gum or use snuff or rub during the healing period; these increase the risk of piercing infections astronomically.
  • Don’t play with the piercing jewelry or click it against your teeth; this can cause cracking of your tooth enamel.
  • Don’t engage in any activities, including kissing, that exchange body fluids during the initial healing period of several weeks.

General tips to improve healing success Proper piercing aftercare is the primary reason for a successfully healed body modification, but your overall health and how well you take care of yourself is also a contributing factor. If you are run-down or your immune system is compromised, you will not heal as quickly and you will be more prone to infection. For that reason, you should keep in mind a few things whenever you have any kind of piercing in order to help ensure that your piercing aftercare measures are given the best chance of success:

  • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Eight glasses of day at the very least.
  • At least eight hours of sleep a night
  • Try to limit the amount of stress in your life
  • Vitamin C and Zinc supplements to help speed the healing process
  • Lots of fruits and vegetables, and a multi-vitamin if needed
  • If the pain bothers you, take Ibuprofen. If you are comfortable, you are less likely to fidget with the piercing.

Signs of trouble Even with excellent piercing aftercare, there will be some swelling at the site of a piercing for a few days. You’ll also have some clear, watery discharge and perhaps some mild bleeding. The bleeding will usually stop within 24 hours, while the discharge may last for several days or weeks. This is simply drainage of the wound and actually helps prevent piercing infection. Signs that the piercing is in trouble include:

  • Discharge that becomes noticeably thicker and is yellow or green in color. This is a sign or infection and should be checked by a doctor.
  • Inflammation that lasts longer than a few days, with redness and irritation. See your piercing professional or doctor.
  • Red streaks from the piercing site and a fever, along with body aches. See your doctor.
  • Hives, redness, itching and irritation around the piercing, which may signal an allergic reaction to the piercing jewelry. Your piercing professional can try replacing it with an alternative metal.
  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing after your piercing, or a feeling that your mouth or throat are swelling closed. Seek emergency attention immediately!

So how long does all this healing take? If you perform your piercing aftercare properly, your body piercing will heal cleanly and leave you with a beautiful new piercing with no scarring, migration or keloids. The time it takes to achieve this, however, will vary depending upon what kind of piercing it is. The general timeframes listed below are just for reference. All of these depend upon your individual body’s response, how much stress you are under and a thousand other variables. Earlobe or Eyebrow: 6 – 8 weeks
Genitals: 4 weeks – 4 months
Labret/Lip: 6 – 8 weeks
Navel: 6 – 18 months
Nipple: 3 – 6 months
Nostril: 3 months – 1 year
Septum: 6 – 8 weeks
Tongue: 4 – 6 weeks
Cartilage: 3 months – 1 year Disclaimer: All piercing aftercare information provided herein is for information purposes only. Arthritis – The Inflammatory Disease

Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, joint cartilage, inflammatory disease, extreme fatigue, these are just a few. One of the most common conditions in the world today is a debilitating inflammatory disease that affects our joints. It is estimated that there are over 100 different forms of this disease and over 40 million people suffer from one form or another. Though typically thought to be an affliction of the aging, arthritis can affect anyone at any time, and with all of the different forms, each with their own symptoms, it could be hard to determine just what type of arthritis an individual is suffering from. The signs and symptoms of arthritis and inflammatory disease are varied, though some of the first symptoms are familiar and easy to recognize. Symptoms such as general pain or swelling around the joints, an increased stiffness in the joints in the morning, a cracking sound in the knees when standing, and joints with a red appearance that feel warm to the touch are all signs of arthritis. However, before you rush to purchase an over-the-counter treatment, you should find out what arthritis you actually got. Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the most common forms of sickness that plagues sufferers. It affects the joints and is a systemic disease that can affect other organs. Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms tend to disappear after sometime, but the problem is still there. The true cause of the illness is presently unknown, though many suggest that things such as infections, fungi, or bacteria are the culprits. However, there are also those that believe that rheumatoid arthritis is hereditary. Painful and swollen joints are a common warning sign of this illness followed by muscle pain, extreme fatigue, redness and warmth at the joints even a low grade fever and appetite loss. Next to rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis is a common affliction, caused by breaking down of joint cartilage. This illness commonly begins in one joint and typically only affects the one joint. It does not move to internal organs. It mostly affects the knees, hips, hands, and spine. By the time the pain starts setting in for an osteoarthritis sufferer, the damage to the affected joint cartilage could be considerable. Relieving pain from a form of arthritis can be as simple as over-the-counter or prescription medication. However pain relief can be achieved in most cases with good food supplements, and change of diet. Being overweight can also play a role in this sickness. Some physicians believe that a change in diet can also ease the pain of arthritis, though there is a lot of debate on the topic. Regardless, you should do you own research to find out what form of arthritis you may have, and what treatment options may work best for you. The problem with script medicine, it concentrates on the symptom not the cause of it. The side effects of script medicine are sometime worse than the actual pain or sickness. The body will in many ways repair itself without side effects if given the right ammunition. Our typical diet is unhealthy and has few nutrients this is a good start for sickness, most of our food is overloaded with refined sugars, high fructose, corn syrup, preservatives, artificial chemicals, hydrogenated oils, added hormones, food colouring, food dyes, a preservative called sodium benzoate-found in many soft drinks, fruit juices and salad dressings, and the list goes on and on. This is a ticket for any sickness not only Arthritis and inflammatory disease, it’s a good target for Cancer it gives Cancer everything it could possibly want to develop. One of the old saying, we are what we eat! We need daily the antioxidants, essential vitamins, minerals, fatty acid, omega 3 and 6 which are essential in the human diet. These fatty acids are essential because they cannot be synthesized in the body, but must be obtained in the diet. We also need Glucosamine to help maintain healthy joint function. Glucosamine, Hydrochloride is also required to help and form cartilage, lubricate, protect, and rebuild joints. These are only some of the things to get Arthritis-inflammation disease under control, and become pain free the natural way. For more information and to discover what most people will never know

Fainting Goats – Farm Fun Pets

Farm owners are often asked, “Are you kidding?”  “Do Fainting goats really exist?”  No kidding, fainting goats are real!  These goats are called by a variety of names: stiff-legged goats, scare goats, nervous goats and Myotonic goats.  To understand their name, you should know their characteristics and background.

Fainting goats originally came from Nova Scotia.   They were first recorded in history, from Marshall County, TN, back in the 1880s. A man named, Tinsley moved to the northern part of Marshall County, Tennessee and brought with him four goats and a cow.  These goats showed nervous, strange, tendencies.  When these goats became startled, their leg muscles would, temporarily, become rigid causing them to lose their balance and fall over! When myotonia, (stiffening of the muscles) sets in, some goats may not completely loose their balance and fall over, but their knees may buckle.  When these goats are placed in situations of extreme stress or fear, their epinephrine and cortisol, (fight or flight hormones) cause increased muscle tension throughout the body.  Myotonia, stiffening of muscles, actually helps build more muscle in these goats.  The goats do not loose conscious, are not having a seizure, and their central nervous system is fine. Their muscles just tighten up and then relax. This startled condition only lasts for about ten to fifteen seconds, then afterwards these goats are up and running again. The fainting goats were almost extinct by the 1980s but are now thriving throughout the world.  Marshall County, Tennessee is named the “cradle” of the Myotonic goat.  These goats have lived here for decades.  Keep in mind that just because a goat faints does not mean it is a Tennessee fainting goat. You should understand other characteristics of Tennessee fainting goats to help you with distinguish between breeds.

What other characteristics do Tennessee fainting goats have? Many of these goats have bulgy eyes with their eyes set wide apart.  Their eyes vary in color from varying shades of brown to rare shades of deep blue or icy blue.  Their eye placement gives their head a straight-forward type of profile.  The nose is wider and more rounded than other breeds, not sharp or pointed.  Their medium length ears may be straight, bend downward at the middle or bend downward and forward shading their eyes.   They come in varying colors, black and white or a variety of colors with different markings and combinations of patterns. These goats have bodies with increased muscle mass due to the myotonia gene!  They have a sturdy framework with bold face expressions.  They are, generally, hardy, disease resistant and good mothers. Most wean their kids on their own.  They milk, generously, for about four months.  These goats are slow to mature so extra care needs to be given when breeding these animals.  They are not fully mature until four years old. Tennessee fainting goats can live twelve to fifteen years or more with the proper goat care.

Here is a fun fact about these goats.  Have you ever heard of the expression, “scapegoat”? According to some scholars, shepherds kept fainting goats with their flocks of sheep as insurance against predators.  When wolves or other predatory animals would attack a flock of sheep, the fainting goats would become startled and faint.  The wolves or other predators would focus so much on the stunned goats, it allowed the sheep to flee and escape.  Therefore, the term “scapegoat” refers to the sheep that escaped with the help of the fainting goats.

Fainting goats are wonderful farm animals. These farm fun animals are, mostly, very calm, proud and easily taught. Their sweet personalities will win your heart!

Be sure to see the Myotonic Goat Registry at the country jam, Goats, Music and More Festival, October 8th, 9th and 10th, 2010 in Lewisburg, Tennessee!   Admission is free! You will find, fun, food and entertainment for all!

Detox Solution to Eczema and Dry Skin

Eczema is a very common annoying skin condition. It is very difficult to treat and the chance of recurrence is extremetly high. Very often, eczema is accompanied by dry skin.

If you have eczema and dry skin from young, like me, then you will know that topical treatments suggested by your western doctor are not going to solve the problem. These topical treatments more often than not, help to relieve the itchy symptoms during the period of application. But, the itchiness returns after a while, costing you more money, time, and heartache.

The difficulty in treating eczema lie in the difficulty in finding out the cause of eczema and dry skin in the first place. But there are things you can do to make the recurrence of flare-ups of these skin conditions few and far between.

One highly recommended way is to detox your body. Do you need to detox? Well, skin flare-ups are indications of toxins. Hence, if your body has a reaction, then you should examine what you put into your body. Ask yourself a few questions about your lifestyle and recent events in your life. By finding the cause, you may be able to treat, at least partially, your eczema and dry skin.

A detox diet program will require an analysis of your eating preferences. Do you eat processed foods and high amounts of sugar? These can inflame the skin and add to the toxins your body has to process.

In addition, are there certain foods that you are allergic to? Seafood has been found to trigger off a whole range of skin flare-ups. It took me more than 3 months to treat myself from just eating 3 prawns and 2 tiny squids during a seafood lunch.

Do you drink enough water? Without it, your body can’t wash away accumulated toxins – through detox or any other method.

Do you exercise? Sweating facilitates the cleansing process and helps to eliminate toxins via the pores in the skin.

Finally, are you stressed out? Stress negatively affects many levels of your health and well being. When I am stressed, I find that I am more prone to scratching myself. Try to solve the cause of your stress and look for ways to relax.

A one-time detox is not likely to completely eradicate your eczema problem. However, as you detox more regularly and adopt more healthy lifestyle habits, then you will find that you are less likely to itch, scratch and bleed in the days ahead!

Autism What is it

So Autism what is it?….

Autism is a developmental disability of the brain; autism is not a form of mental retardation.

The word autism can refer to several similar disabilities, like Autistic Disorder, Aspergers Syndrome, also Atypical Autism (a type of Pervasive Developmental Disorder, not otherwise specified) etc.. There are differences between these conditions, but on the whole they are quite similar.

The word ‘spectrum’ is used because, while all people with autism share three main areas of difficulty, their condition will affect them in very different ways. Some are able to live relatively ‘everyday’ lives; others will require a lifetime of specialist support.

There are three main areas of difficulty which all people with autism share these are referred to as the ‘triad of impairments’. They are:

“Difficulties with communication”;  “Difficulties with social interaction”;   “Difficulties with imagination”. Some autistic people may be affected more by one symptom, while others may be affected more strongly by a different symptom.

People with autism may experience some form of sensory sensitivity. This can occur in one or more of the five senses – sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. A person’s senses are either intensified (hypersensitive) or under-sensitive (hypo-sensitive).

For example, a person with autism may find certain background sounds, like the hum of a fridge for example unbearably loud or distracting, while the rest of us can ignore or block out the noise. To an autistic person the noise can cause anxiety or even physical pain, this can be referred to as an autism anxiety trigger.

People who are hypo-sensitive will often not feel pain or extremes of temperature. Some may rock, spin or flap their hands to stimulate sensation, this is called autistic stimming. An autistic person will use stimming to help with balance and posture or to deal with stress, another autism anxiety trigger

People with sensory sensitivity may also find it harder to use their body awareness system. Which tells us where our bodies are, so for those with reduced body awareness, it can be harder to navigate rooms without walking into objects or bumping into others. They will not appreciate what is an appropriate distance from other people to stand.

This can cause social problems, as the person will be unaware of the need for personal space and may stand very close, making people feel very uncomfortable.

They may also have problems with ‘fine motor’ tasks such as tying shoelaces, or fastening buttons…

Sometime autistic people may have learning disabilities, which can affect all aspects of their life, from going to school, to learning how to wash themselves, clean their teeth, Or how to feed themselves.

The symptoms of autism will vary from person to person each autistic person will have a different degree of learning disability.

Some autistic people will be able to live fairly independently, but may need some support.

While others may require lifelong, specialist support. However, all people with autism can, and do, learn and develop with the right sort of support and resources.

One such form of autism resources is something called autism social stories…These are short pieces of text with appropriate pictures-giving your autistic child, teen or adult specific social cues for everyday living skills.

Like how to wash their teeth, visiting the doctor, eating out. Social skills stories for autistic children and teens, or adults can be printed and used as instructions for all of life’s “normal” and “not so normal” life experiences and actions.

They can be like a best friend to an autistic person helping them feel better in, and cope with, situations they may struggle to understand or deal with – by giving them clear and accurate information about those situations.

Autism social stories are an excellent resource tool which can become a valuable part of an autistic person’s life.

Autism Treatment – Heavy Metals, Other Testing and Treating Autism

This is video 6, the final one in my series on heavy metal testing, and I want to talk about some other tests. There are some specialized blood tests that are available from some of the labs, like Neuro Science for example, which look at immune system reactivity as a response to heavy metals in the body. One triggering event for allergies is exposure to heavy metals, like aluminum, and so this is very important. And we also know that heavy metals, like aluminum, can be generating factors when it comes to stimulation of allergic reactions and to generating inflammation due to immune activation. So these very specific and specialized tests can help indicate whether there is a level of susceptibility for immune system activation caused by a heavy metal toxicity exposure. And for a child who is facing immune dysfunction, a child that seems to have immune over-reactivity and a child that seems to have immune inflammation, this may be a good clue as to what is going on. And there could be many things that are impacting these auto-immune reactions. Things in the environment could be impacting it, it could be something going on in their own body, it could even be food that is triggering these auto-immune reactions. So to reiterate, this is just another method of assessing this heavy metal exposure, and more specifically the heavy metal toxicity that is generating this immune activation, inflammation and over-reaction in the body.

I do hope that this information has been valuable to you. I do realize that I have presented a lot of information here, it was quite a bit of information to both take in and to give in a clear, concise manner through these videos. And if you still find that you have questions about heavy metal testing or heavy metal toxicity, I suggest that you visit my website www.autismactionplan.com. My website offers so much in the way of detailed information about a variety of biomedical subjects. And if we are just focusing on heavy metals, I have written material on treatment protocols to video presentations on heavy metal toxicity. I have a whole section that is dedicated to helping you understand the hair analysis interpretation with respects to the mineral transport issues that can come with heavy metal exposures, as I have talked about before. But, even more valuable is the ability to ask your specific questions of me through the parent forum each day, on a wide array of biomedical topics. Colic Humans and Horses

Colic is one problem that both humans and horses share. But unlike with babies, of which colic is just an incidental problem that will go away after a few months; colic in horses is a serious problem that need to be addressed immediately.

Baby colic

Colic is a problem in the digestive tract characterized by a pain in the stomach or in the abdomen. Until now, there is still no reason why this happens in babies. Experts believe that colic arises from the gas in the intestines. In babies, colic starts as early as three weeks.

First signs will of course be frequent crying and screaming that can last anywhere from an hour to five hours nonstop. It peaks during the second month and declines during the third month. By the end of the fourth month, incidents of colic will just cease.

And though there is really not much danger that colic poses to babies, parents are still worried because of the amount of crying that it can ensue. Because there is no known cause, there is also no specific cure or solution. In fact, the only thing that parents can do is to make their experience of colic as less painful as possible. This is done by putting babies in comfortable positions like in swaddling, walking them or making them listen to some soothing music. Parents should avoid giving them too much food because this will only exacerbate the problem.

Horse colic

Colic in horses is not the same. In addition to being a serious problem, colic in horses can appear anytime, any age. The same reactions are elicited in horses. They will also be crying and groaning, prancing and kicking all over the place. In severe cases, they can even become so wild that they will assume difficult and almost unnatural positions just to be relived of the pain.

However, horse owners should remember that colic in horses has a much different onset. Unlike with humans where the pain can be readily felt and shown through crying, horses will deal with it alone through listlessness and lack of energy.

They will start to refuse food and will not have any appetite for eating. This is one of the signs that horse owners often miss when trying to deal with colic. Remember that they will only get wild and restless when the pain is too severe for them to bear. Otherwise, they only suffer in silence.

Wired differently

Horses cannot also cope with colic the same way humans can. Because of their different body structure and body system, they are not able to vomit or relieve the pressure that they are feeling in their stomach. Because of this, the pain and the problem can build up inside; thus worsening the situation. This is perhaps why colic in horses is much serious. In fact, while some horses do respond to therapy and eventually get well; most will deteriorate despite medication and treatment.

Another reason why colic is a problem with horses is the fact that they are built in different ways. Passages of blood and food in their bodies are much narrower; thus, more susceptible to impactions and obstructions especially with food.

When afflicted with colic, it is important that you call a veterinarian as soon as you can so that he can administer appropriate treatment. Make sure also that your horse does not have any access to solid foods such as hay or grass. The only thing that the horse is allowed to take in is water.
